Many homeowners have a hard time decorating their dining rooms. They put in a table and chairs and then wonder what to do next. Well, styling your dining room can be as easy as 1, 2, 3! Decide on the room’s function. What is the main function of your dining room? This may seem to be a ridiculous question. After all, it is a dining room. But different families use their dining rooms in different ways. Some like it to be a room saved for special, formal gatherings. Others want to use their dining room to eat on a regular basis. Some families even like to use this room as an extra space for crafts and homework. Once you know what your main activity will be in that space – and how you and your family will be using the room, you can more easily decide what pieces need to go in. For example, if your kids do homework or art projects in the dining room, make sure you have a buffet or cabinet with closed doors to store and hide supplies while they are not in use. Decide on your style. Since your dining room is (usually) in the main part of your home, it has to be designed in harmony with the rest of your rooms. You can add new color and patterns, but make sure the overall style matches the general design of your home. Is your home designed in a contemporary style? Look for sleek chairs in steel or wood, modern metal light fixtures, and a glass-topped table. For a more traditional look, you can choose upholstered chairs and add an area rug. If you want a really formal dining room, install a crystal, multi-tiered chandelier and really dress up the windows. Decorate! When you are aware of your room’s function and style, decorating is a piece of cake. Choose furniture, storage, and accessories that follow your function and match your style, and your dining room will be fabulous. And then invite me over for dinner!
